Cats communicate primarily through body language. Learning to read your cat's signals will help you understand their needs and strengthen your bond.
Tail Positions
Tail Up
A tail held high indicates a confident, happy cat. If the tip is slightly curved, they're feeling friendly and approachable.
Tail Puffed
A puffed tail means your cat is frightened or feels threatened. Give them space.
Tail Low or Tucked
This indicates fear or submission. Something is making your cat uncomfortable.
Ear Positions
- Forward: Alert, interested, happy
- Sideways or back: Nervous or irritated
- Flat against head: Fearful or aggressive
Eye Signals
Slow blinking is a sign of trust and affection - often called "cat kisses." You can slow blink back to show love.
[note type="info"]Dilated pupils can indicate excitement, fear, or even hunting mode. Context matters![/note]Vocalizations
- Meow: Usually directed at humans
- Purr: Contentment (or sometimes stress)
- Hiss: Warning - back off!
- Chirp: Greeting or excitement
Body Postures
A relaxed cat will have loose muscles and may roll on their back (though this isn't always an invitation for belly rubs!).
