Understanding Cat Body Language: What Your Cat Is Trying to Tell You

Cats communicate primarily through body language. Learning to read your cat's signals will help you understand their needs and strengthen your bond.

Tail Positions

Tail Up

A tail held high indicates a confident, happy cat. If the tip is slightly curved, they're feeling friendly and approachable.

Tail Puffed

A puffed tail means your cat is frightened or feels threatened. Give them space.

Tail Low or Tucked

This indicates fear or submission. Something is making your cat uncomfortable.

Ear Positions

  • Forward: Alert, interested, happy
  • Sideways or back: Nervous or irritated
  • Flat against head: Fearful or aggressive

Eye Signals

Slow blinking is a sign of trust and affection - often called "cat kisses." You can slow blink back to show love.

Vocalizations

  • Meow: Usually directed at humans
  • Purr: Contentment (or sometimes stress)
  • Hiss: Warning - back off!
  • Chirp: Greeting or excitement

Body Postures

A relaxed cat will have loose muscles and may roll on their back (though this isn't always an invitation for belly rubs!).
