What to Feed Your Rabbit: Complete Nutrition Guide

A proper diet is essential for your rabbit's health and longevity. Rabbits have sensitive digestive systems that require specific foods. Here's everything you need to know about rabbit nutrition.

The Foundation: Hay

Hay should make up 80-90% of your rabbit's diet. Timothy hay is ideal for adult rabbits, while alfalfa hay is suitable for young rabbits under 7 months. Unlimited hay keeps their digestive system healthy and wears down their constantly growing teeth.

Fresh Vegetables

Offer 2-4 cups of fresh vegetables daily for a medium-sized rabbit. Good options include:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • Cilantro
  • Parsley
  • Bok choy
  • Carrot tops
  • Bell peppers
[note type="warning"]Avoid iceberg lettuce, potatoes, and onions - these are toxic to rabbits.[/note]

Pellets

High-quality pellets should be given in limited amounts - about 1/4 cup per 5 pounds of body weight daily. Choose plain pellets without added treats or seeds.

Treats

Fruits should be given sparingly due to high sugar content. Safe treats include:

  • Apple (no seeds)
  • Banana
  • Berries
  • Papaya

Fresh Water

Always provide fresh, clean water. Water bottles or heavy ceramic bowls work well.
